Álvaro Arbeloa announces retirement

At the age of 34, Spanish defender Álvaro Arbeloa has made a clear decision. He has decided to hang up his boots after a disappointing - to say the least - season at West Ham in the Premier League.

In an interview with Marca, Arbeloa, who is closely associated with Real Madrid, confirmed the news. "The time has come to say goodbye," he said to the aforementioned outlet. The former Spanish international also explained his reasons.

"Physically, I was able to continue playing, it was more of a mental issue," said Álvaro Arbeloa to the aforementioned outlet. "Madrid is the club of my life, but I will never call to ask for anything, only to offer," he added.

Arbeloa, who also played for Deportivo La Coruña and Liverpool, has a trophy cabinet that any footballer would envy: 2 Copa del Rey titles, 2 Champions League titles, 1 La Liga title, 1 UEFA Super Cup, 1 Supercopa de España. At the international level, he won two European Championships and one World Cup.
