The Evolution of Club América's Squad
When Miguel Herrera left the coaching position of Club América to embark on a World Cup adventure with the Mexican national team, he was coaching players like Miguel Layún and Raúl Jiménez, who are currently part of the group of Mexican players playing in European soccer.
Since then, with the arrival of coaches like Gustavo Matosas and Antonio Mohamed, the squad has undergone substantial changes. These changes have left only three players with whom Herrera had the opportunity to work with during his previous tenure.
Erik Pimentel, Gil Burón, and Paul Aguilar are the only three players who have survived from the Club América team that lost the final against León in the 2013 Apertura, which was Herrera's last tournament as the coach of the team.
Out of these three players, Aguilar is the one that Miguel has the most confidence in. Aguilar was not only a key player during Herrera's first tenure, where they won a league title, but he was also included in the squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The case of Pimentel and Burón is different, as they only had the opportunity to play 6 and 4 games, respectively, during that period. Neither of them played in the final against León.
Rubens Sambueza and Moisés Muñoz could have reunited with ‘El Piojo’, but both left Club América prior to the last league tournament.
