Venezuela wins to secure their place in the quarterfinals of the U-20 World Cup

Venezuela's U-20 team defeated Japan in the extra time of the Round of 16 match (1-0), securing their place in the quarterfinals for the first time in their history.

Neither of the two teams managed to score a goal during the regular 90 minutes, despite both teams having chances to break the deadlock.

It was a header goal by captain Yangel Herrera from a corner in the second half of extra time (108') that secured the victory for Rafael Dudamel's team.

Venezuela, who had won all three of their group stage matches, struggled against the 'Blue Samurai', but their offensive strength and defensive security, which has kept their goal unbeaten since the beginning of the tournament, proved to be decisive.

Venezuela, whose best historical result was reaching the Round of 16 in Egypt 2009, will now fight for a spot in the semifinals against the winner of the match between the United States and New Zealand.

PREVIEW

The Venezuelan U-20 team will face Japan on Tuesday (04:00 am) in the first match of the Round of 16 in the U-20 World Cup in South Korea.

Venezuela, one of the standout teams in the group stage, will achieve their best performance in history if they eliminate the Japanese team.

The 'Mini-vinotinto', who topped Group B with three wins, 10 goals scored and none conceded, will face the 'Blue Samurai', who qualified for the Round of 16 as one of the best third-placed teams after their draw against Italy in the final match of Group D.

If they win, Rafael Dudamel's team will surpass Venezuela's historical ceiling in a World Cup competition, the Round of 16 achieved in Egypt 2009, where the generation led by Salomón Rondón fell to the United Arab Emirates (2-1).
