Wolfsburg defeats Eintracht Braunschweig with a penalty goal
A penalty goal converted by Mario Gomez gave the victory to Wolfsburg against Eintracht Braunschweig (1-0) in the first leg of the promotion playoff.
The playoff will be decided next Monday at the Eintracht Stadium in Braunschweig.
The match played at the Volkswagen Arena remained uncertain after Wolfsburg, led by Dutch coach Andries Jonker, failed to achieve a larger scoreline in the first leg.
Wolfsburg, who competed in the Champions League a year ago and is currently fighting to avoid relegation, was only able to overcome their opponent with a penalty goal converted by international striker Mario Gomez in the 35th minute.
Eintracht Braunschweig, third in the second tier of German football and aspiring to return to the top division, held their own for the rest of the match. They are looking to turn the situation around at the Eintracht Stadium next Monday.
