Ayrton Senna Square inaugurated in Sao Paulo

The Ayrton Senna Square was inaugurated today in Sao Paulo, in tribute to the Brazilian racing driver who died exactly 23 years ago, on May 1, 1994, due to an accident at the Imola circuit in Italy.

The square is located in the Ibirapuera neighborhood, one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Sao Paulo, known for its large green spaces. The inauguration was attended by Joao Doria, the city's mayor, as well as Viviane and Bianca Senna, the pilot's sister and niece, respectively.

The square was designed by architect Benedito Abbud and features a bronze helmet donated by the Ayrton Senna Institute, as well as the monument "Speed: soul and emotion" that was located in a tunnel in Sao Paulo named after the pilot.

"The city deserved a space where people could admire that work that was in the tunnel, to which people did not have access. I believe that, more than a square, it represents a set of values that Ayrton left," said Viviane Senna.

Senna, considered by many as the most talented and charismatic driver in the history of Formula One, died at the age of 34 due to a fatal accident in the race being held in Imola.

Throughout his career, he won three Formula One titles (1988, 1990, and 1991), achieved 41 victories, and 65 pole positions. A survey conducted by Datafolha in 2014 showed that, 20 years after his death, he was still the greatest sports idol in Brazil.
