Diego Elías - World Squash Champion
A great performance by national squash player Diego Elías in 2023 gave him the first place in the World Squash Ranking, making him the first South American athlete to achieve this accomplishment.
Tournament Success
The athlete had several appearances in various international tournaments this year, such as the JP Morgan, Motor City, and Pittsburgh. By winning these three competitions, he managed to position himself at number 2 in the rankings. He then delivered an impressive performance in the Black Squash Open, however, he was defeated by Egyptian-English player Mohamed ElShorbagy with a score of 3-2.
Injury Setback
Despite this defeat, the national athlete participated in another tournament, the Optasia Championships 2023 in London. Unfortunately, Elías suffered an injury that forced him to withdraw from the match against Egyptian player Karim Abdel Gawad.
Rise to the Top
Despite losing in these two competitions, the PSA World Squash Rankings Forecast website published a post indicating that, with the elimination of Mohamed ElShorbagy (3 PSA) from the tournament, the Peruvian player would hold the first place in the World Ranking of this sport starting from April 3.
Upcoming Challenge
It is worth mentioning that the national squash player will have to continue competing to maintain this position. His next challenge will be the British Open 2023 in Birmingham, England, from April 9 to 16.
