The vice-captains will be Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Inter Milan forward Romelo Lukaku.

The decision has been made by the new coach of the Belgian national team, Domenico Tedesco, who last week announced his first list of selected players for the Belgian team.

"I am very proud to be the captain of our country. I have played with this team for a long time and I hope to do a good job for Belgium," De Bruyne said in a video released by the Belgian Federation.

The 32-year-old midfielder made his debut for the Belgian national team in 2010 while playing for Genk, after which he went on to play for Chelsea, Wolfsburg, and Werder Bremen before signing with Manchester City in 2015, his current club.
