Iranian authorities indicate that the football player is involved in the death of a security agent during a protest
Amir Nasr-Azadani, Iranjavan club defender who has played for Iran's U16 national team, is facing the death penalty for being part of a group of nine people who tried to attack the "foundations of the Islamic Republic of Iran," said Abdullah Jafari, head of the Judicial Authority of Isfahan.
"Amir and three other people are the origin of a protest that took place on November 16 in Isfahan," during which three security agents died, according to Jafari.
Amir Nasr-Azadani is suspected of being involved in the death of one of the three security agents, according to the Tasnim news agency.
The World Professional Footballers' Union (FIFPro) expressed "shock" at the risk of execution of the 26-year-old Iranian footballer.
FIFPro is "shocked" and "disgusted" by reports that professional football player Amir Nasr-Azadani could be executed in Iran after campaigning for women's rights and fundamental freedoms in the country. We stand in solidarity with Amir," the union wrote on Twitter on Monday.
This reaction comes after the outcry abroad following the recent executions in Iran of two young people arrested during the protests sparked by the death on September 16 of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd who died after being arrested by the morality police for violating the strict dress code of the Islamic Republic.
Amir Nasr-Azadani began his football career at the Tehran team, Rah-Ahan, with whom he made his debut in the Iranian Premier League.
Former Iranian international star Ali Karimi, a fervent supporter of the protests, supported the footballer with a tweet: "Do not execute Amir."
