The Nigerian international and former Chelsea player John Obi Mikel announced his retirement from football on Tuesday with a catchy phrase: "all good things come to an end".

“I look back on the 20 years of my career and I must say that I am very satisfied with everything I have achieved and most importantly, the person that it has helped me become”, said the 35-year-old midfielder on Instagram.

Among his achievements is the Champions League he won in 2012 with Chelsea, which, after the announcement of his retirement, remembered him as “a fresh face who arrived at 19 years old”.

In a decade with the Blues, Mikel "played 372 games", recalled the London club, adding that he also won two Premier League titles and the Europa League.

The player expressed his satisfaction with what he has achieved: "All good things come to an end and for my professional football career, today is the day".

The former captain of the Nigerian national team had closed his international career by helping his team achieve third place in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Egypt. In his résumé, Mikel played 89 international matches, scoring six goals, between 2005 and 2019.

In addition, among his achievements, he highlights the bronze medal he won at the 2016 Rio Olympics with his country's Olympic team.

After leaving Chelsea in 2017, he played a couple of seasons in China with Tianjin before returning to England, where he played in the second division with Middlesbrough. Trabzonspor, Stoke, and Kuwait were the last three stops of his long career.
