Aston Villa desperately needs a win to keep pace with the rest of the English Premier League and stay out of the relegation zone. Villa has only won one of its first six games though it did ease the pressure on manager Steven Gerrard by recovering to draw against Manchester City in its last match.
Adding more complication for Aston Villa, midfielder Boubacar Kamara has been called up for France’s upcoming Nations League matches as a replacement for the injured Adrien Rabiot, the French soccer federation said Friday. France, facing relegation to the second tier of the Nations League, plays Austria on Sept. 22 and then travels to Copenhagen three days later to take on Denmark.
Meanwhile, Southampton has two wins in its last four matches but already finds itself eight points behind first-place Arsenal. The Saints lost their last encounter 1-0 on the pitch at Molineux, as Daniel Podence scored the only goal in the last minute of the first half for the Wolverhampton Wolves.
Aston Villa has won two of the last three matches in this series, outscoring Southampton 5-1.
The Premier League will resume after a two-week break prompted by the death of Queen Elizabeth II, who will be the subject of tributes in this match and also the one between Nottingham Forest and Fulham. There will be a minute’s silence before the games followed by the national anthem, while fans will be invited to applaud at the 70-minute mark in recognition of the queen’s 70-year reign. The entire round of games last weekend was called off out of respect for the monarch.
