Harry Maguire, captain of Manchester United, said that Cristiano Ronaldo, author of the first goal against Villarreal, "was brilliant" and that they need to be solid so that the Portuguese can win games.
Cristiano gave United the victory this Tuesday with a goal in the final minutes that qualifies the 'Red Devils' for the round of 16 and leaves Villarreal third and in trouble.
"Ronaldo has been brilliant," said Maguire on BT Sport. "We need to be solid again, because if we achieve that, we give him the opportunity to win matches when we have him in attack."
Tuesday's match was Michael Carrick's first as United manager after the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last Sunday.
"It's a very good result for our season. The last two months have not been close to good and we needed a good result today to steer the campaign and give our fans some joy. This has to be just the beginning," said Maguire.
"In the first half it was tough. It was key to stay in the game and the guys who came off the bench helped us a lot in the second half. The performance was very good there. The goal was to get the victory. I think we deserved it in the end for the chances we created," added the English player.
