Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) achieved his eighth victory of the season on Sunday at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, where he led a podium that included locals Lando Norris (McLaren), second, and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), third.
Verstappen continues to rapidly approach a third consecutive world title. His main rival in the standings, his Mexican Red Bull teammate Sergio Pérez, finished a distant sixth in the race, making a great comeback after starting from fifteenth on the grid.
In the overall standings, Verstappen's advantage over Pérez increases to 99 points.
Verstappen, the reigning double world champion who has triumphed in the last six races, once again flew over the track and confirmed his great superiority, despite not starting well.
"We had a very bad start. We have to see what happened, but after that both McLarens were extremely fast. We had to stay focused to surpass them. After that, everything went well and I was able to build my advantage," explained Verstappen just after the race, highlighting the "great resistance" that Norris put up in this race.
Norris had started the race in second place and allowed himself the luxury of overtaking Verstappen at the start, unleashing euphoria among British fans. But the excitement lasted only a few minutes: the Dutchman took the lead in the fifth lap and then controlled the race calmly, although he couldn't achieve as large a lead as usual.
The safety car intervened due to a failure in the Haas of Danish driver Kevin Magnussen on lap 33, regrouping the field. Verstappen had no problem when the race restarted for the last fifteen laps.
Norris was the hero of the day for the local public and stole the spotlight from Hamilton, an eight-time winner of the British Grand Prix.
In the battle for second place, Norris epicly resisted Hamilton's attacks at the end of the race, despite having hard tires compared to the soft ones worn by the seven-time world champion. For Norris, it is the seventh podium of his career and the first since May 2022.
Hamilton, who had started seventh on the grid, had a great race in any case.
The McLaren of Australian driver Oscar Piastri finished fourth and the Mercedes of British driver George Russell finished fifth.
On the other hand, Ferrari had a disappointing race. Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc and Spanish driver Carlos Sainz Jr had started in fourth and fifth respectively, and finished the day's classification five places lower, as ninth and tenth, behind the Williams of Thai driver Alex Albon -eighth- and the Aston Martin of Spanish driver Fernando Alonso -seventh-.
It was a disastrous day for the Alpine team, as neither of its two cars finished. French driver Esteban Ocon retired on lap ten due to a hydraulic leak and his compatriot Pierre Gasly retired in the final part of the race, after breaking his suspension in a collision with the Aston Martin of Canadian driver Lance Stroll.
Formula 1 will return in two weeks, with the Hungarian Grand Prix taking place on Sunday, the 23rd.
