New French Women's Soccer Coach Named
The 54-year-old French coach gained worldwide fame when he led Saudi Arabia in Qatar 2022.
Hervé Renard was appointed on Thursday as the new coach of the French women's national team until August 2024, replacing Corinne Diacre, who was dismissed on March 9, announced the French Football Federation (FFF).
Renard (54), former coach of Saudi Arabia in the 2022 World Cup and two-time winner of the Africa Cup of Nations, with Zambia in 2012 and with Ivory Coast in 2015, has never before coached a women's team.
His mission will be to make the French team shine in the women's World Cup scheduled from July 20 to August 20 in Australia and New Zealand, as well as prepare the Olympic team for the 2024 Paris Games.
Renard bid farewell to the Saudi national team last Tuesday after a friendly match lost to Bolivia (2-1). In Qatar, the Asian team caused a sensation by defeating Argentina, the eventual tournament champion, in the first match of the group stage.
The experienced coach replaces Corinne Diacre, who was dismissed by the French federation after some of the country's top female soccer players threatened to quit the national team if changes were not made in the team's management. AFP
