In Spain, the National Identity Document (DNI) is issued by the National Police Directorate and is considered the most important identification document for citizens, as it verifies most of their personal data.
Over time, it has evolved and, in 2006, the Electronic National Identity Document (DNIe) was created. This added an integrated chip that serves to electronically verify your identity unequivocally.
Thus, in January 2015, the DNI 3.0 was presented, which incorporates NFC technology. In other words, in addition to being able to use it for almost all online procedures with the public administration, you have the possibility of using it to travel without the need to carry another document. This is because it has a data structure equivalent to that of a passport.

CAN YOU VISIT THE UNITED KINGDOM ONLY WITH YOUR ELECTRONIC ID CARD?
The short answer is NO. Since 2021, the electronic ID card is no longer valid as a travel document to enter the United Kingdom. For this reason, you need a passport.
It is worth noting that there is an exception: those individuals who have used this document in their EU Settlement Scheme registration can continue using it until December 31, 2025.
HOW TO OBTAIN THE ELECTRONIC ID CARD
According to the National Police Body, you can obtain the electronic ID card in just 4 steps.
- The citizen requesting their ID card for the first time, and therefore the associated electronic certificates, must go to an ID Issuance Office.
- To apply for the issuance of the National Identity Document, the physical presence of the person to whom it is to be issued is essential.
- The delivery of the National Identity Document and the associated certificates will be made personally to the holder on the same day they apply for their issuance.
- Once the document management phase and the physical personalization of the card are completed, the logical personalization phase begins with the data loading on the support card chip. The generation of keys will be carried out on the card and in the presence of the holder, after enabling a random PIN that is delivered in a blind envelope.
