Who is Szymon Marciniak, the referee of the great final between Argentina vs. France for Qatar 2022?

Polish referee Szymon Marciniak has been appointed as the referee for the final of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar between Argentina and France, which will take place at the iconic Lusail Stadium, as announced by the Polish Football Federation.

Ahead of FIFA and through an official statement, the Polish Federation informed that Szymon Marciniak becomes the first main referee from the country to officiate a World Cup final.

He is considered the best referee in the history of Poland, now 41 years old and with a career that has been steadily rising since his professional debut in 2009 and his internationalization in 2015. He has also been present in the decisive stages of the most important tournaments in Europe, such as the 2018 Super Cup final and one of the semifinals of this season's Champions League.

Szymon Marciniak has already refereed matches for the Argentina national team on two occasions. The first took place at the 2018 World Cup against Iceland, a match in which the Albiceleste struggled and ended in a tight 1-1 draw.

The second opportunity came in Qatar 2022 during the round of 16 against Australia, where Lionel Scaloni's team prevailed 2-1.

On this occasion, the officiating team will be composed of three Poles: Szymon Marciniak as the main referee; Paweł Sokolnicki and Tomasz Listkiewicz will be his assistants. It's worth noting that the latter is the son of Michał Listkiewicz, who was a line judge in the 1990 final between Germany and Argentina.
