As we know, the Peruvian referee made his debut in England vs. Iran in the first group stage match, serving as the fourth official, as in the other matches. Ortega traveled to the Asian country along with Michael Orué and Jesús Sánchez, also from Peru.

However, Kevin Ortega had his farewell match in France vs. Poland in the round of 16, in a match that ended 3-1 in favor of the French, who will face England for a place in the World Cup semifinals. So, here we explain why he will not referee anymore, like the other two Peruvians.

The reason is simple, since there are fewer teams left, a total of 8 out of the initial 32, the number of matches is reduced and with it the required number of referees. That's how FIFA reduced it to a total of only 20 referees, 39 assistants, and 19 in the VAR, although Kevin Ortega still gained experience.
