Wayne Rooney returns to DC United as coach
Former English footballer Wayne Rooney, who played for DC United in the final stage of his career, will return to this MLS team but as its coach.
The Athletic reported on Sunday that Rooney and the team from the US capital have reached an agreement for him to sit on the bench, and the Englishman is already in Washington to finalize the last details.
The newspaper The Washington Post also stated that there is already an agreement for Rooney to be the new coach of DC United.
In his debut as a coach in the MLS, Rooney will have a difficult task with a team that is tied for last place in the Eastern Conference with the Chicago Fire and that suffered one of its most humiliating defeats in its history on Friday, losing 7-0 to the Philadelphia Union.
Chad Ashton had been the interim coach of DC United since the dismissal of Argentine Hernán Losada in April.
Rooney resigned as coach of Derby County at the end of June after the team's relegation to League One (English Third Division).
Rooney arrived at Derby County in 2020 as a player-coach and finally took on the role of coach to save the team last season.
The points deductions from this campaign ended up relegating the Rams to League One amid serious financial problems.
As a player, Rooney knows both the MLS and DC United since he was the star and captain of this team from 2018 to 2019.
In 48 regular season matches with DC United, the forward scored 45 goals.
