Spanish football is once again in the eye of the storm, and now a former footballer from Girona has spoken about the proposal he received to deliberately lose in the Second Division.

Bribery cases are nothing strange to the world of football. In recent days, LaLiga has become involved in problems due to the 'Caso Negreira' and now Aday Benitez, former player of Girona, spoke out about receiving proposals to let his team lose in the local tournament. In response, the organization quickly issued a statement indicating that they will begin the respective investigations.

"I was offered 50,000 euros to let my team lose," the former left-back revealed before going into detail about the issue. "They offered it to me and many others. It was absurd to accept. That year we were being promoted to the First Division, we had one more match left. I wasn't going to tarnish the entire season for one game", Aday said about the last game of the 2017 season, in which Girona had already been promoted with one match to spare and had nothing to play for.

To provide more details about the situation he experienced in LaLiga, he explained the 'modus operandi' of those involved in this shady operation. He also mentioned that he experienced a similar situation in Tenerife, although he could never prove it because there was no contact with him.

"They contact a player, this player becomes the link and agrees with the players he trusts. You need at least three players to be involved for the bribery to work. If you buy a goalkeeper, a center-back, and a striker, you practically have it done", he asserted.

The response from LaLiga

Benitez's statements did not go unnoticed in LaLiga, and the organization responded immediately to these serious accusations with a complaint. Now they will seek possible culprits and prevent this type of scenario from happening again. "LaLiga's Integrity and Security Department has as one of its objectives the prevention, detection, and reporting of any behavior that infringes on 'fair play' and can adulterate the competition. Match-fixing is a crime, as is proving the mere intention to propose bribery", states the statement from the Iberian football organization.

In order to count on the cooperation of the football world, it continues: "We remind you that through LaLiga's reporting channel, any fan can provide information for the investigation of these types of crimes against the integrity of the competition".
