Great news for Mexican soccer. Monterrey said goodbye to César Montes and wished the defender the best at Espanyol: "He will now fulfill another one of his dreams as a professional footballer, which is to play in European soccer."The Mexican is already in Barcelona to sign for his new club, which plays in the Spanish Santander League.

"I am happy, thrilled, and ready to enjoy. It is worth all the sacrifice I have made to be here, and what is coming is exciting for me. I am not afraid, I face it with a lot of enthusiasm," César commented upon setting foot in Catalan territory.

After several weeks of negotiations between the 'Rayados' and 'Periquitos', the deal is practically done, and if there are no surprises in the medical tests, Montes will be a new player for Espanyol in Barcelona.

He also said that he wants to follow in the footsteps of his forever idol, 'Rafa' Márquez, and will wear the blanquiazul like his mentor, Héctor Moreno, a teammate in defense both in Monterrey and the Mexican national team: "I am aware of the club thanks to Moreno, I know it is a historic club."

Montes, the fifth Mexican at Espanyol

'Periquitos' is one of the teams with the most Mexicans in the Spanish League, as 'Cachorro' would be the fifth to play in their ranks and the first in over five years. The first Mexican to play for Espanyol was Germán Villa (1998). 'Paco' Palencia was the second (2001). The third was Héctor Moreno (2011-2015), and the last Mexican at Espanyol was Diego Reyes. It is also worth mentioning that Javier Aguirre coached the club between 2012 and 2014.
