"I hope they respect me: I'm gay" was the message posted by Iker Casillas, the Spanish former footballer, on his Twitter account around noon last Sunday. Immediately, the response messages from his fans did not wait, even his teammate and former Barcelona FC player, Carles Puyol replied: "It was about time to tell our story".
This exchange of messages generated unease among their followers and they criticized the two athletes for joking about such a sensitive topic. Within seconds, Casillas deleted the tweet and posted another one where he explained that his account had been hacked.
"Hacked account. Luckily everything is fine. Apologies to all my followers. And of course, apologies to the LGBTQ+ community", said the historic player from Real Madrid.
PUYOL APOLOGIZES
Puyol, on the other hand, also apologized to his community, stating that it was all a tasteless joke and reiterated his support for the LGBTQ+ community.
"I made a mistake. Sorry for a clumsy joke with no ill intention and completely out of place. I understand that it may have hurt sensitivities. All my respect and support to the LGBTQ+ community."
