The Brighton from England signed Ecuadorian defender Pervis Estupiñán, from Spanish Villarreal, this Tuesday in an operation worth around 17 million pounds (20 million dollars).

Estupiñán signed a five-year contract with the Premier League club, which was looking for a replacement for Spanish Marc Cucurella after his move to Chelsea.

"We are excited about what Pervis brings us, and he occupies a position for which we have been looking to provide greater depth," said Brighton coach Graham Potter.

"Beyond his international experience, he played with Villarreal in the Champions League and Europa League, as well as gaining a lot of experience in La Liga. We will help him settle here in England but we are looking forward to working with him and seeing him in action in the Premier League," he added.

The 24-year-old player had signed for Watford in 2016 but spent four seasons on loan in Spain, at Granada, Almería, Mallorca, and Osasuna, before joining Villarreal in 2020.

Pervis helped Unai Emery's team win the Europa League in his first season at the 'Yellow Submarine'.

He has accumulated 26 international matches with Ecuador. He will coincide with his compatriots Moisés Caicedo and Jeremy Sarmiento in his new team. AFP
