Barcelona eliminated from the Europa League

FC Barcelona, the favorite to win the Europa League title, was surprisingly eliminated in the quarterfinals on Thursday by losing 3-2 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt, with whom they had drawn 1-1 in the first leg in Germany.

The team from the German financial capital, who will play against English side West Ham in the semifinals, inflicted a heavy blow on Barcelona in the first half thanks to the goals from Serbian player Filip Kostic (4th minute penalty) and Colombian player Rafael Santos Borré (36th minute).

In the second half, Kostic (67th minute) extended their lead and in injury time, Sergio Busquets (90+1) and Dutch player Memphis Depay (90+11 penalty) scored for Barcelona, but couldn't complete the comeback.

Following the eliminations of Sevilla, Betis, and Real Sociedad in previous rounds, the Europa League is now without Spanish clubs in this edition. Spain has had one of its representatives win the tournament in eight out of the previous twelve editions.

Therefore, there will be no Spanish team in the final on May 18, which will be held at the Sánchez Pizjuán stadium in Seville.

With this exit, Barcelona only has the Spanish LaLiga as an option to salvage the season. They are second in the league, but they are far behind the leader Real Madrid, 12 points adrift. It seems they are more focused on securing a spot in the top 4 and qualifying for the next Champions League.

Barcelona's European journey this season has been marked by disappointment.

They started in the Champions League but failed to advance to the knockout stage, finishing behind Bayern Munich and Benfica.

They then competed in the Europa League as a consolation, eliminating Napoli and Galatasaray before this tie against Eintracht.

In six home matches in European competitions this season, Barcelona only managed to win one (1-0 against Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League), which proved to be fatal.

The disappointment is immense for Barcelona, who seemed to be in great form with a run of fifteen consecutive matches without a loss and seven consecutive victories. Now, the euphoria comes to a sudden halt.
