This Wednesday, November 3, the presentation of the plan for the first sustainable edition of the Davis Cup was held in Madrid, Spain. Footballer Gerard Piqué was one of those in charge of opening the event as the CEO of Kosmos, the organizing company of the tennis tournament that will take place between the Spanish city, Innsbruck, and Turin.

In a press conference, the FC Barcelona defender spoke about the importance of the capital city to host large-scale sports events. "I love my city (Barcelona) more than anything, but I have healthy envy for Madrid, for everything they are doing. It is an example for Europe and the whole world. I would like Barcelona to be at that level," said the footballer.

The Catalan player also referred to the eternal struggle between his club and Real Madrid, which goes beyond the sports field. "Madrid must be praised. I have always felt at home here and I don't do it for money. With the rivalry that exists, I love being received hostilely or with whistles. It is part of our job. (...) The Real Madrid is a team that I have an extreme rivalry with; but I would have no problem organizing the Davis Cup at the Bernabéu if it made sense, it is complicated," he said.

It is worth noting that Piqué avoided referring to the current situation of his club and the possible arrival of Xavi Hernández as coach.

New facet

The Catalan defender took advantage of the event to show a new facet as an activist for environmental care by presenting the sustainable plan for the Davis Cup along with his organization. The event will promote various actions such as the use of QR codes to avoid paper waste, and the distribution of food surpluses. In addition, the conference presented the Reciclar Vidrio Te Lleva a la Davis campaign, in which participants can deposit three glass bottles in containers distributed throughout the Spanish capital to receive two free tickets to the tournament.
