Liga de Quito will face Sao Paulo in the quarterfinals of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, a stage they are very familiar with as they will be competing in it for the sixth time.
The first time they reached the quarterfinals of the second continental competition was in 2004, when they defeated Santos from Brazil after winning both matches. They were then eliminated in the semifinals against Bolivar, who would later become the runner-up against Boca Juniors.
In 2009, they became champions after defeating Fluminense in the final. They eliminated Velez Sarsfield from Argentina in the quarterfinals and River Plate from Uruguay in the semifinals.
A year later, they once again advanced past the quarterfinals by eliminating Newell's. They lost in the semifinals against Independiente from Argentina.
They repeated in 2011, when they lost the final against Universidad de Chile. They defeated Libertad and then Velez on their way to the final.
They lost in the quarterfinals for the first time in 2021, against the future champion Athletico Paranaense.
In total, Liga de Quito has reached this stage five times. They have advanced four times and have been eliminated once.
On the other hand, in the Libertadores, they reached the quarterfinals three times and only won once, in 2009, when they were champions.
