Emelec from Ecuador defeated Sporting Cristal from Peru 1-0 this Wednesday in Lima, in the first leg of the round of 16 playoffs of the Copa Sudamericana-2023.

The winning goal for the electric team, which is playing the tie after finishing second in Group B of the Sudamericana, was scored by José Fernando Cevallos at 52 minutes of the match played at the National Stadium.

The second leg will be played next Wednesday in Guayaquil.

The winner of the tie will face Defensa y Justicia from Argentina in the round of 16.

Cristal started the match with good collective play to corner the Ecuadorian team in their field at the National Stadium, where more than 30,000 fans of the 'rimense' team arrived.

With good triangulations, the players of the Peruvian team easily reached the goal of goalkeeper Pedro Ortiz.

After the 10th minute, the electric team, who played with alternate jersey, woke up to generate quick counterattacks. But Cristal maintained solid pressure led by midfielder and captain Yoshimar Yotún, who played well in the central zone of the field.

The Peruvian team needed a good result to reach the second leg match next week in Guayaquil calmly.

At 39 minutes, José Cevallos took a right-footed shot from long distance that passed near the goalkeeper Renato Solis' goal.

Despite dominating the match, Cristal failed to open the scoring in the first 45 minutes due to the good defensive performance of the rival team, who closed their goal well.

In the second half, the team led by Brazilian Tiago Nunes maintained the same playing arguments as in the first half. Intensely pressuring their rival, but with problems in the definition.

At 52 minutes, midfielder José Cevallos scored the 1-0 for Emelec with a strong right-footed shot after a perfect pass to the center of the area from defender Fernando León. The goal silenced Cristal's fans for a few seconds.

After conceding the goal, Cristal stepped up the pace to seek the equalizer, but Emelec maintained their solid defense.

At 58 minutes, Brazilian Nunes made a change and brought on striker Washington Corozo to provide more offensive power to his team.

At 64 minutes, Colombian coach Hernán Torres from Emelec sent Venezuelan forward Samuel Sosa onto the field to secure the result.

With several changes, Cristal sought to reverse the score, but encountered a solid defense led by goalkeeper Ortiz, who saved several direct shots on goal.
