What is the Format of the South American U-20 Championship?

All matches of the South American U-20 Championship are played in the host nation, and the ten national U-20 teams from Conmebol participate in each edition (unless an association withdraws). The teams are divided into two groups of five, where they play against each other once, meaning each team plays four matches.

The top three teams from each group of the South American U-20 Championship advance to a final round of six, where they also play against each other once, meaning each team plays five matches. The results of this final round determine the champion and the South American qualification for the next U-20 World Cup, and in some editions, the Olympic Football Tournament or the Pan American Football Tournament.

Unlike most international competitions, the South American U-20 Championship does not have a final match, a match for third place, or direct elimination stages between teams. In case of a tie in points among teams in either of the two rounds, the classification is determined by the following system:

  • Goal difference.
  • Number of goals scored.
  • The result of the match(es) played between the tied teams.
  • Random draw.
