The Board of the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) awaits the response of Argentine coach Gustavo Alfaro to the proposal for him to continue as the absolute selector of the Tri, said director Amílcar Mantilla on Wednesday, December 7th.
"The Federation wants Coach Alfaro to continue. We have talked about it, but he has not made any decision, so we await his announcement," said Mantilla, a member of the FEF Board, presided over by Francisco Egas.
So far, there is no official statement other than the intention to ratify Alfaro in his position, who coached the Ecuadorian national team from the South American qualifiers for the World Cup in Qatar until the group stage of the tournament.
Mantilla expressed concern about the uncertainty generated by Alfaro's lack of response, as the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup begin in March.
Under Alfaro's technical direction, Ecuador qualified for its fourth World Cup, which took place this year. In the group stage, the Tri defeated the host team 2-0, drew 1-1 with the Netherlands, and lost 2-1 to Senegal, failing to advance to the knockout stage.
Alfaro assumed the technical direction of Ecuador at the end of August 2020, and his contract with the FEF ended with the team's participation in the group stage.
