Colombia suffers a heavy defeat against Ecuador

Colombia, led by Carlos Queiroz, was overwhelmingly beaten by Ecuador in Quito, losing 6-1. "A result that calls for a change of coach," titled the newspaper El Tiempo from Bogota, reflecting the reaction of the Colombian press that demands the departure of the Portuguese coach.

"For the second consecutive match, the Colombian National Team was inferior to the circumstances and ended up being defeated and humiliated by Ecuador," says the Colombian media, referring to the double match of the South American qualifiers for Qatar 2022 with 3-0 losses against Uruguay and 6-1 against Ecuador.

Robert Arboleda, Ángel Mena, Michael Estrada, Xavier Arreaga, Gonzalo Plata, and Pervis Estupiñán scored for Ecuador. James Rodríguez scored a penalty goal for Colombia.

In Colombia, they couldn't bear the terrible defeat suffered by the national team against Ecuador. Carlos Queiroz was the most criticized on social media, with fans calling for his resignation and longing for the return of José Pékerman.

It is necessary to go back 13 years to find a Colombian team that lost two consecutive matches by a large margin: it was in the Copa America in Venezuela in 2007. In the first match of that tournament, Paraguay won 5-0 on June 28. The nightmare continued on July 2 of that year, when Argentina defeated them 4-2 and sealed their elimination.

El Tiempo recalled that in official matches, Colombia had not conceded four goals in a first half since March 6, 1977, against Brazil. That day they lost 6-0 at the Maracanã. It was also the last time, moreover, that the National Team received that number of goals.

Furthermore, this is the worst defeat in history against Ecuador, surpassing two 4-1 losses in 1949 and 1977.
