The national health emergency and the worldwide spread of the coronavirus caught a considerable delegation of Ecuadorian athletes outside the country, as detailed by the Secretary of Sports, Andrea Sotomayor, who also explained that precautions will be taken for their return.

"A total of 64 Ecuadorians (athletes and multidisciplinary team) from ten sports disciplines are outside the country in various international events," Sotomayor detailed on social media.

Several of these athletes participated in different disciplines over the weekend, some with auspicious results for the national sport in view of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, whose celebration has not been defined by the organization.

The Azuay athlete Elizabeth Bravo competed in Australia at the Mooloolaba Triathlon World Cup, where she obtained fifth place and qualified for Tokyo.

Another delegation that had activity was the wrestling team, which participated in the Pan American Pre-Olympics held in Canada. Eight athletes and their coaching staff traveled to this event, but beyond the sports results, there is the planning of their return, between today and tomorrow, to Guayaquil.

"We are in direct contact with the Ecuadorian federations to take precautionary measures once they return to the country," commented Sotomayor. (D)
