Since September 2019, the agreement between the Ecuadorian Olympic Committee (COE) and the Pan American Sports Organization was announced to donate an athletics track endorsed by World Athletics to the Azuay Sports Federation (Fedeazuay).
However, the project has been paralyzed. The construction, which should have already been installed on the Jefferson Pérez track in Miraflores park in Cuenca, suffered a delay during the last two months due to an issue in Fedeazuay, which could not register its new financial administrator. But once resolved, the structure will be completed in the next 90 days, as informed by the COE through a press release.
"Now it only remains to register the new administrator so that the advance payment can be made and thus begin with the civil work, which will take around 50 days, this would be around March 27 or 28. We will see if we can expedite the importation process for the exemption of the track so that it can arrive in Cuenca as soon as possible," said Edwin Loyola, president of Fedeazuay.
Augusto Morán, president of the COE, met with the authorities of Fedeazuay to address the issue. "The beneficiary organization is Fedeazuay and the COE sees this project as a national project that will benefit all athletics in Ecuador," he said.
The COE sent a report to Panam Sports regarding the delays in the construction, and the national Olympic entity will remain as a guarantor to continue the process and avoid losing the donation.
Afterwards, the federation will request that Consudatle review the new track as the venue for the 2021 South American Adult Championship.
The new track, which meets all the approved specifications according to international standards, covers a total area of 5500 meters, with eight lanes, areas for field sports, and warm-up areas.
