Liga de Quito is the first winner of the Ecuador Supercup, the university team overcame Delfín in penalties (5-4), after the 1-1 draw in regular time. The whites start the season as champions, but the work "is to be improved," said their coach Pablo Repetto.
"A title always motivates, but this has just begun. Regardless of the achievement, we have to think about what's coming, there is a lot to work on this season, but this title is a boost for those who joined the group this year, and not to mention for those of us from previous seasons," said the Azucena strategist.
Liga won two out of three titles played against Delfín in recent months. The whites won the Ecuador Cup in November, lost the LigaPro in December, but make a difference with the Ecuador Supercup title.
Repetto stated that this last title "is not a revenge," but he spoke of "justice" after what was achieved against the Manabita squad.
"Based on the matches we played against Delfín since 2019, I think justice was done, we cannot talk about revenge, but we were better in all the matches," said the Uruguayan.
The whites start the season as champions in which they will compete in three tournaments, with the Copa Libertadores as their maximum challenge for 2020, in addition to the LigaPro and the defense of the title in the Ecuador Cup.
"Achieving this and starting the year with a title will always be important, considering everything that lies ahead in the season," commented forward Cristian Martínez, author of the white goal in regular time.
Meanwhile, Júnior Sornoza highlighted the victory as "a boost for the group. We did a good job, we deserved to win and we have to celebrate, but also think about the debut in the tournament against Deportivo Cuenca," said the Manabí player, who sealed the victory in the penalties.
The club's management spoke of a "huge effort to maintain the level and hierarchy of a squad that reached two finals last year. We improved at the base of the team, but that's on paper, we have to consolidate it on the field," said Esteban Paz.
"A demanding season is coming, we have important tournaments and the only thing we can guarantee for now is that there will be effort on the field, that we will be important actors. Then it's difficult to talk about repeating titles, everything will depend on the work and humility of the group to pursue the goals set," said the director of the Azucena squad. (D)
