About Deportivo Quito's Return to Professional Soccer
In a penalty shootout, Deportivo Quito's future in 2020 was decided. The team competed in the Copa Pichincha final on Saturday, which offers the possibility of playing in the Second Category, against Chile de Uyumbicho.
With a large crowd in attendance, the match was played at the Atahualpa Olympic Stadium. The capital team took the lead through Jefferson Santa Cruz in the first half, however, the chullas were surprised by Chile who, after scoring the equalizer, took the lead in the second half.
Finally, Eddy Suárez scored the final 2-2 goal, leading to a penalty shootout in which Deportivo Quito emerged victorious with a score of 5-4.
With this result, Quito earned their right to play in the Second Category and return to professionalism. However, the debts they still owe will be reactivated.
Deportivo Quito was sentenced to play in the amateur division in 2019 due to a debt with former footballer Martín Andrizzi. This measure was imposed by FIFA (International Federation of Association Football). In 2016, they were docked points for the same debt. (D)
