Israel defeated South Korea 3-1 on Sunday in the match prior to the final between Uruguay and Italy, and secured third place in the 2023 U-20 World Cup in Argentina. Israeli player Ran Binyamin, with a scissor kick worthy of being considered one of the best goals of the tournament, opened the scoring (19th minute) at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium in La Plata, where Italians and Uruguayans were playing later.
Coach Ofor Haim rested his star players for this match, exhausted after the semifinal loss to Uruguay. Instead, Kim Eun-jung presented her best lineup. Lee Seung-Won, who also scored against Italy in the previous match, equalized from the penalty spot in the 24th minute. In the second half, Omer Senior scored Israel's second goal in the 76th minute in a similar play to the first goal but without as much spectacle. Anan Khalaili extended the lead in the 85th minute.
Israel achieved its best World Cup result in history. In its only qualification for the senior World Cup in Mexico 1970, it only made it past the group stage. South Korea reached the semifinals of the U-20 World Cup for the second time. In 2019, it lost the final to Ukraine.
