Within the great crowd at the 'xeneise' stadium on the night of March 6th, the board of the Argentine institution paid tribute to a well-known former player, who had a remarkable passage with the 'Azul y Oro' in the 1960s.
We are referring to Julio Meléndez, former national team player and champion of America in 1975, who played at a high level for the Argentine team for four and a half years (1968 - 1972), becoming captain and an idol.
During halftime, our compatriot was honored, receiving a commemorative plaque in the company of another legend like Ángel Clemente Rojas, in front of the thousands of fans present at the Alberto J. Armando Stadium.
"He's the Peruvian and his ballet"
Due to his good performances with Boca Juniors, the fans of the time used to sing a chant to Meléndez: "and here you see it, and here you see it... he's the Peruvian and his ballet". With the 'xeneises', he won the leagues of 1969 and 1970, as well as the Argentine Cup of 1969 and was considered in the club's all-time ideal eleven.
Meléndez visited Martín Palermo
Before being honored by Boca at La Bombonera, Julio Meléndez took advantage of his visit to Buenos Aires to visit Martín Palermo, current coach of Platense, during the team's training sessions.
