A new chapter in Chile: Omar Merlo was introduced as a player for Curicó Unido.

New year, new challenges. After leaving Sporting Cristal , little was known about the new direction that Omar Merlo 's career would take until today, after the Argentine defender was announced as the new reinforcement for Curicó Unido for the 2023 season.

"Omar is albirrojo. Welcome Omar Merlo! The experienced Argentine-Chilean defender, 35 years old, joins our club for our challenges this season. Let's go all in!", the official account of the southern club posted, along with a video that compiles the best moments the defender had with the rimense team.

Omar Merlo spent most of his career in his native Argentina and later in Chile, where he wore the San Felipe and Huachipato jerseys. However, in 2018, he reached an agreement with Sporting Cristal, where he became a key player and a two-time winner of the local championship.

From then until the end of 2022, Merlo played 205 matches with the 'celestes', scoring 13 goals and assisting in 11. In the last season alone, he accumulated 3,599 minutes in 41 games, scoring three goals and providing two assists.

Despite his identification with the club, an agreement was not reached between both parties, so the departure of the defender was announced through social media. As a result, the board of directors of the bajopontino team began the search for a defender, also with offensive characteristics, eventually signing Ignácio Da Silva.

For now, Sporting Cristal has outlined a plan to move forward in the 2023 season. The debt of winning the national title (last achieved in 2020) remains, as well as aiming for a better performance in the Copa Libertadores, where they will participate from the second preliminary round this time.
