Hace una semana, the Argentine national team made history by winning their third World Cup, after 36 years. The majority of the Albiceleste squad had an outstanding performance in the Qatar 2022 World Cup and were even treated as idols by their fellow citizens. Two of them are Rodrigo De Paul and Nicolás Otamendi, who tasted defeat against Alianza Lima.
Although both players have been winning finals recently, it wasn't always like that in the past. It turns out that in 2014, when De Paul and Otamendi coincided in Valencia, Spain, they played in the Euroamerican Cup, where they faced the blanquiazules and lost in a penalty shootout.
This match was played on July 26, 2014, at the Estadio Nacional de Lima. After 90 minutes, the match ended in a 2-2 draw with goals from Mauro Guevgeozián and Mauricio Montes for the íntimos, while Alcácer and Otamendi equalized for the Spanish side. This led to a penalty shootout, which the Peruvians won 9-8 with a missed shot from Rodrigo De Paul.

Despite the victory for íntimos in the penalty shootout, that edition of the Euroamerican Cup was won by Europe with a close score of 5-4 against South America. The team led by Guillermo Sanguineti helped add a point to CONMEBOL, but it wasn't enough.
