Violence stole the spotlight in La Plata. A regrettable night in El Bosque, with a fan dead. Boca Juniors was drawing 0-0 with Gimnasia y Esgrima, but the match was suspended because the police started launching tear gas due to serious incidents with fans outside the stadium, for the League Tournament. And Sergio Berni raised his voice, among other participants, pointing the blame at the organizer of the match.
The incidents unfolded outside the Juan Carmelo Zerillo Stadium when local fans, who were trying to enter after the gates had closed, clashed with the police, who tried to contain them by firing rubber bullets and throwing gas that invaded the field and affected both the fans in the stands and the players themselves.
Due to the serious incidents, referee Hernán Mastrángelo had to suspend the match. It was revealed that a Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata supporter had passed away. A 57-year-old man named César Gustavo Regueiro suffered a heart attack after sustaining injuries and died in an ambulance on the way to the San Martín Hospital, as confirmed by Berni, the Minister of Security for the province of Buenos Aires.
Berni arrived in La Plata by helicopter and stated, "The responsibility lies with the organizer of the match between Gimnasia and Boca Juniors." When asked about police attacks with shots close to fans, he said, "The videos will be carefully reviewed to determine who acted properly and who did not."
On the other hand, Gabriel Pellegrino, the president of Gimnasia, distanced himself and pointed fingers at the police, saying, "All we can show is that the stadium was authorized for 30,000 people, and we sold 3,200 out of the 3,500 tickets we were allowed to sell. It's a lie that we oversold; we have the records, we have the leftover tickets, it's very well controlled. 3,254 tickets were sold. The police decided to close the stadium gates; we did not give that order. We saw people who wanted to enter with their card and ticket; there were empty seats in the stands."
