The Boca Juniors team finished second in the group stage behind Estudiantes de la Plata. During the knockout stage, they faced Defensa y Justicia, who they defeated 2-0 at La Bombonera Stadium with Luis Advíncula and Carlos Zambrano as starters.

The Peruvians faced Racing de Avellaneda - the favorite of the Argentine tournament - again in the semifinals and Boca Juniors advanced in the Professional League Cup after winning 6-5 in the penalty shootout.
On the other hand, the recently promoted Tigre has been the great revelation of the domestic tournament. In the regular stage, the Matador was part of the same group as Boca and finished in third place. In the quarterfinals, they caused a surprise by eliminating Marcelo Gallardo's River Plate.

Then, they defeated Argentinos Juniors in the semifinals after winning 3-2 in the penalty shootout; they drew 1-1 in regular time. The last time the two finalists faced each other was on the 7th of this month. However, the red and blue team already knows what it's like to win a final.
