Two days from now will mark one year since the death of Diego Armando Maradona, yet his image still lives on in the memories of Argentinians and football lovers. For this reason, referees and players paid tribute to 'Pelusa' before the Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata 5 vs. Talleres 2 match.
The individuals involved stood in the middle of the field and formed a giant number 10 - in reference to the number Maradona always wore - while fans from both teams applauded and filled the Juan Carmelo Cerillo stadium with cheers.
The fans of Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata were deeply moved by this tribute. As it is remembered, the 'Lobo' was the last team that Diego Maradona managed before his death.
Nelson Castro: "Maradona was buried without a heart"
In an interview for Almorzando con Mirtha Legrand on El Trece channel, physician and journalist Nelson Castro spoke about his book La salud de Diego: la verdadera historia, in which he recounts different aspects of the death of the Argentine star on November 25, 2020.
"There was a group of Gimnasia ultras who planned to break in and extract Maradona's heart. That did not happen because it was an act of great audacity. It was discovered that this was going to happen, so his heart was also removed for study, as his heart was very important in determining the cause of Maradona's death. Clearly, the information is that he was buried without a heart," he said.
Furthermore, Dr. Nelson Castro explained that "Maradona's heart weighed half a kilo, it was a very large heart. Normally, it weighs 300 grams, even though he had an athlete's heart, which is a big heart. But his heart was big for another reason, not only because he was an athlete but because of the heart failure he had."
