Fluminense signs Uruguayan forward Abel Hernández for one season
Fluminense, one of Brazil's most traditional football clubs, announced on Friday the signing of Uruguayan forward Abel Hernández for one season, until December of this year.
"I am very, very happy to join such a great team like Fluminense, which has a great squad and a great coach," said Hernández in a statement released by the Rio de Janeiro club.
The 30-year-old attacker joins the Rio de Janeiro team from Internacional de Porto Alegre, where he played at a high level and fought for the title of the Brazilian Championship last season, which was ultimately won by Flamengo on the last matchday.
Hernández will have the opportunity to play in the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense, which has been drawn in Group D along with River Plate, Junior de Barranquilla, and Independiente Santa Fe.
The Uruguayan marksman will be another attacking option for coach Roger Machado, who already has the experienced Fred, a local idol at 37 years old, for that position.
"We are going to compete for the position, but I believe we can form a good striker duo. I came here to contribute to the team," expressed Hernández in the statement.
Hernández's signing follows that of Ecuadorian attacking midfielder Juan Cazares, 29, who left Corinthians to join Fluminense. The club presented Hernández with a video featuring images from the Captain Tsubasa (Super Campeones) anime series, of which he is a fan. He has also scored a bicycle kick goal in the Premier League.
