The Argentine coach Hernán Crespo, champion of the South American Cup with the modest Defensa y Justicia in January, will coach Brazilian team São Paulo for the next two years, the club announced on Friday.
On their Twitter account, São Paulo posted a photo and a video with a message featuring Crespo: "Where the legs can't reach, the heart will reach."
"After a careful and technical evaluation, consulting different professionals, we understand that Hernán Crespo fits perfectly into what we envision for São Paulo. He has a victorious history, was a great athlete, and is a very promising coach," said club president Julio Casares.
"We will have a commander with a winning mentality and the São Paulo DNA," added Casares, without specifying if the successful former footballer, 45 years old, would immediately take on his role.
Crespo will replace Brazilian Fernando Diniz, who left the São Paulo bench in early February. The team, which includes Brazilian international Dani Alves and Spanish player Juanfran, lost its lead in the Brasileirao due to a string of poor results.
São Paulo is currently in fourth place in the Brasileirao, with 59 points, 7 points behind the leader Internacional, with four games left in the tournament. Closing the gap seems difficult, but they will have to fight to maintain their position that guarantees a spot in the Libertadores.
Out of the remaining four matches, two are against teams that are trying to overtake them (Gremio and Palmeiras, the current Libertadores champion) and another against Flamengo, who is competing for first place.
According to the Argentine press, Crespo, former Argentine national team striker, River Plate and Inter Milan player, among other clubs, was approached to coach the Chilean national team and a club in Italy. AFP
