Gastón Silva was presented this Wednesday as the new player of Huesca, who a few weeks ago achieved promotion to the First Division of Spain. The Uruguayan defender thanked for the opportunity and briefly mentioned his situation with Independiente.
The player, who was formed in Defensor Sporting's youth academy, first expressed his gratitude to the Spanish club: "I am grateful to Rubén (García, sports director) and the club for opening these doors for me. Returning to football, competing, and doing it in such an important league as the Spanish one is a great joy. We will try to do our best for the club."
During the press conference, Silva was asked about his situation with Independiente, the club with which he currently has a legal dispute: "The previous club has said things that are not true, but I feel calm. With my family, my lawyers, and those around me, we have done everything correctly to try to do what is right. That matter is with the lawyers. I am focused on Huesca, it is a joy and a pride to be able to return to football and defend this shirt that opened the doors for me."
The defender had made a public statement at the end of July stating that 'Independiente did not fulfill the agreed economic commitments' and that the Argentine club, by counter-suing him for 8 million dollars, seeks to 'generate fear in clubs that may be interested in signing me; market terrorism'.
Trying to focus on his new team, the 26-year-old defender commented on what he can bring to Huesca: "I will try to bring strength to the defense and contribute with my experience to the team. I feel good in aerial play." Silva also mentioned that he can lend a hand as a left-back, a position where he has played a significant part of his career.
"The club opened the doors for me at a not so easy time. The league is also very important. These things opened my mind and brought me here today," he said regarding the main aspects that influenced his decision to join the blue and maroon team.
Huesca will make its official debut in La Liga 2020/21 this coming Sunday when it visits Villarreal for the first match of the season. "One has the need to play; one will always want to be on the field, but it will depend on the coach's decision," assured the Uruguayan about the possibility of being available this weekend, which will be almost impossible despite the defender's desire. He signed a contract until June 2021.
Silva has already played in the Spanish First Division in the 2016/17 season when he defended Granada's shirt. Huesca will be the fifth club in the left-footed center-back's career. He was formed, made his debut, and played three seasons in Defensor, then spent two years in Torino (2014/15 and 2015/16), followed by the aforementioned season at Granada, and finally arrived at Independiente in August 2017.
