Christian Cueva has decided to stay at Santos in 2020 to do what he couldn't do this year: earn a spot in the team. However, with the departure of Jorge Sampaoli, it is unknown who will be the head coach of 'Peixe' next season, and several names are already being mentioned in the Brazilian media.
After Santos missed out on the option of Ariel Holan, who went to Universidad de Chile, they are now targeting another coach with recent experience at Independiente and who was Jorge Sampaoli's assistant for a long time: Sebastián Beccacece. However, with the possibility of also going to Racing, the 38-year-old coach may not accept the proposal from the Brazilian team.
In addition to Sebastián Beccacece, another alternative of Argentine nationality that is being considered at Santos is Matías Almeyda. Currently, the 'Pelado' is coaching the San Jose Earthquakes in the MLS, where Peruvian defender Marcos López plays. However, it is unknown how willing the former River Plate coach would be to leave the North American club to have his first coaching experience in Brazil.
Lastly, but not least important, another option to coach Santos is Spanish coach Miguel Ángel Ramírez. The 38-year-old coach comes from winning the Copa Sudamericana with Independiente del Valle, which makes him an attractive alternative for any club in South American football.
