Gonzalo Aguirre, player of Defensores de Belgrano, from the third category of Argentine football, was arrested this Thursday accused of raping and killing his 5-year-old stepson, as confirmed by the club.
"The board and the sports community of Club Atlético Defensores de Belgrano express their deep pain and consternation for the cowardly murder and stand in solidarity with the affected family, vehemently repudiating what happened and hoping that justice resolves this terrible situation," the institution reported in a statement.
"Likewise, regarding the player Gonzalo Aguirre, it is informed that he had a contract with our institution, a certified letter was sent to him, which was not responded to, and he no longer belongs to the club due to contract breach, as he has not been attending training for the past six months," the text adds.
The 22-year-old player was arrested in the Buenos Aires town of Grand Bourg.
According to local press, Aguirre initially claimed that the child died from a fall in the bathroom. However, the autopsy revealed that he had been beaten and sexually abused, and the football player admitted his guilt to the police.
"We considered Gonzalo a young introverted boy and, as a player, he was a very strong player who played some matches in the first team, but nothing indicated something of this magnitude. We knew he had some problems due to strange episodes he had, but we never thought of something like this," said the club's president, Marcelo Achile, to the official news agency Télam. EFE
