The Boca Juniors Stadium
The stadium of Boca Juniors generates passions and criticisms. For some, it is a venue in poor condition that moves precisely due to the antiquity and poor construction of La Bombonera; for others, it is one of the few spaces left in South America where the fan can be close to the field and jump as well as scream in support of their team. La Bombonera remains standing, the xeneize team continues to fill the stadium every weekend, however, according to the newspaper Olé, there was a project to retire the mythical Bombonera.
According to a report from Olé, in its Tuesday edition, the late Alberto J. Armando, at the time president of the Boca Juniors institution and owner of Ford dealerships in Argentina, had the idea of building La Nueva Bombonera, a stadium for 140 thousand people that would have been located in Puerto Madero.
How so? In the 70s, Alberto J. Armando was working on a mega-project called Ciudad Deportiva. In 1964, the Argentine congress passed a law granting the club 40 hectares of land located on the riverbank to carry out works within a maximum period of 10 years. To finance all this, the then Boca Juniors leader promoted bonds and the venue began to grow, however, the stadium was still missing.
By 1974, Boca Juniors requested a four-year extension, but it was still impossible to comply with the sports venue. Everything was abandoned, no one continued with the project and La Bombonera could not be retired as planned at that time. Now, with commercial prices, it is more than difficult to buy land in Buenos Aires.
