Thomas Tuchel surprised by Bayern Munich's interest
The coach was contacted on Tuesday night by the club's executives
Thomas Tuchel was "completely surprised" when he was contacted by Bayern Munich's executives on Tuesday night to offer him the coaching position and replace Julian Nagelsmann on Friday, explained the new team coach.
"Believe it or not, I was a bit lost in the first thirty seconds of our first conversation. I didn't know what we were talking about. It quickly became clear that it was for me to start right away," Tuchel explained at a press conference organized at the Allianz Arena, in front of about twenty television cameras.
"I was completely surprised. It was surprising. I didn't expect that at all on Tuesday, there had been no contact before," added the coach, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021.
After a complicated phase in the Bundesliga, with three draws, two losses, and only five wins in the last ten games, leaving the top spot to Borussia Dortmund, Bayern decided to dismiss their coach, Julian Nagelsmann, who had a contract until 2026, to acquire Thomas Tuchel's services for just over two seasons.
The coach, born in Krumbach, in southwestern Germany, was fired from his coaching position at Chelsea in September 2022 and has been available since then, settling in Munich at that time.
Tuchel joins Bayern's coaching staff during the international break and will not have all his players available until Friday, on his first training session with the team's players who are not with any national team, scheduled for Monday.
In his first game of the season at Bayern's bench, Tuchel will face his former club, Borussia Dortmund, on Saturday, April 1, in a decisive classic for the title this season (Borussia Dortmund has 53 points, one more than Bayern). AFP
