The former Ibrox striker and boss has backed Beale for success after initially being underwhelmed by the arrival.

Rangers hero Ally McCoist insists Rangers CAN win trophies under Michael Beale as the club icon dropped the "tepid" initial reaction to the appointment.

Beale will take charge of his first competitive fixture when Hibs visit Ibrox having steered Rangers to a convincing 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, and McCoist has backed the boss to be a success as he jumped on the hype train behind the boss after the friendly victory. The former Queens Park Rangers gaffer faces massive task if he is to derail Celtic's title charge, with Ange Postecoglou's men holding a comfortable nine point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, the Light Blues hero was quizzed on if he thought Beale can bring success back to Govan. He stated: "Of course, Rangers can (win trophies under Michael Beale). The board made the decision to hire Michael and one thing that needs to be done now is for us Rangers supporters to rally around the team and give them support.

"The time is now for Rangers to start winning things again, domestically. It's important that Michael gets support from the board too and I'm sure he will. There are some exciting times ahead."

It's a dramatic change of tune from McCoist after initially being underwhelmed by the appointment. Asked on talkSPORT by host Laura Woods to rate the appointment of Gio van Bronckhorst's successor out of 10 he said: “It’s not going to be a 10 and it’s not going to be a one. It’s somewhere in-between – probably about a six to tell you the truth.”

Woods said that was "tepid" and he added: "I 100 per cent give him my total support because who ever takes the job you want them to do well but I’m a little bit surprised, I can’t lie to you. I’m a little bit surprised.

"I’m very aware Michael Beale knows the club and did very well with the players beforehand and the players seem very comfortable with him which is probably the main reason he’s getting the job."
