San Francisco 49ers Win Thanks to 2022 Mr. Irrelevant
Yes, Brock Purdy made history as the first Mr. Irrelevant to win an NFL game under center, replacing the injured Jimmy Garoppolo in the game against the Miami Dolphins, whom they defeated 33-17 at Levi's Stadium.
It was just over four minutes to play in the first quarter when Jimmy G injured his ankle after being sacked by defensive players Jerome Baker and Jaelan Phillips on third down and six yards to go on the opponent's 19-yard line. Ten yards lost, the quarterback took some time to get up and Robbie Gould came in to convert the field goal.
Initially, it was announced that Garoppolo was questionable to return to the game, but then it was confirmed that he would not come back to the field, and that's when Purdy stepped in to take control of the offense for the second time this year. He had previously done it on October 23rd against the Kansas City Chiefs, ending in a 44-23 loss for the 49ers. On that occasion, he threw for 66 yards and one interception, but became the first quarterback with the Mr. Irrelevant label to complete a pass in a regular season NFL game.
For this game, Purdy finished with a better performance, completing 25 of his 37 passes for 210 yards (5.7 yards per attempt), with two touchdowns, one interception, being sacked three times for a loss of 26 yards, and closing with a quarterback rating of 88.8.
What does it mean to be Mr. Irrelevant?
In English, it is known as Mr. Irrelevant and it is the nickname given to the last selection of each edition of the NFL Draft. Although the first NFL drafts date back to 1936, the first person to be called Mr. Irrelevant was Kelvin Kirk, the last pick of the 1976 NFL Draft.
Purdy was selected in the 2022 Draft in the seventh round, as the 262nd overall pick.
