Ilkay Gundogan was one of the few players from Germany who spoke out after the surprising 2-1 defeat against Japan in the debut of the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
The German midfielder was very disappointed with the performance of his team in the opening of the World Cup and ended up launching a harsh criticism towards the rest of his teammates.
"In the second half, we relied too much on long balls. And the short ones we played, we lost too easily. I felt that not everyone really wanted the ball. We lost it too frequently and too easily," said the footballer to the German network ARD.

The statements of the scorer of Germany's first goal didn't stop there, as he also highlighted the way Japan turned the game around.
"We made it too easy for them. Especially the second goal, I don't know if an easier goal has ever been scored in a World Cup, that shouldn't happen. We are here at the World Cup. The way the goals were conceded in eight minutes was too easy," Gundogan added.
