Real Madrid posted some intriguing photos on their official website after the majority of the squad reported back to Valdebebas for their first meeting with new coach Rafa Benítez. One of the most surprising was a close embrace between Sergio Ramos and president Florentino Pérez after a summer of tension and speculation surrounding his future and reports of a move to Manchester United.
Ramos has a contract until June 2017 but the difficulties in renewing his deal have made his situation at the club a complicated one. Madrid did not pour cold water over the statements of Barcelona presidential candidate Jordi Majó, who said he had been offered the player as part of his campaign, and that seemed to be the straw that broken the camel’s back for Ramos.
Reports suggest Madrid have priced the defender at €90 million and that United would only agree to sell David de Gea to Madrid if they agree to let the former Sevilla man move in the other direction. In England they have looked at the rumours with suspicion: they believe it is all a game by the player’s agent to try and get Ramos a better deal on his next contract.
